Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.36% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.36% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Nuvei Corp (TSX:NVEI), which rose 14.34% or 14.84 points to trade at 118.35 at the close. Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC) added 11.50% or 2.24 points to end at 21.71 and Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) was up 8.46% or 0.11 points to 1.41 in late trade.

Biggest losers included TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TSX:RNW), which lost 6.28% or 1.41 points to trade at 21.03 in late trade. TransAlta Corp (TSX:TA) declined 4.93% or 0.66 points to end at 12.72 and Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX:ABX) shed 3.17% or 0.82 points to 25.01.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 570 to 444 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.25% or 4.25 to $1730.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.96% or 1.97 to hit $68.45 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.48% or 1.71 to trade at $70.75 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.45% to 0.7986, while CAD/EUR rose 0.59% to 0.6811.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 93.062.
