Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.20% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Clean Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.20%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC), which rose 6.73% or 1.49 points to trade at 23.62 at the close. Stelco Holdings Inc (TSX:STLC) added 6.19% or 2.75 points to end at 47.20 and ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. (TSX:ATA) was up 4.06% or 1.72 points to 44.05 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX:EDR), which lost 5.94% or 0.350 points to trade at 5.540 in late trade. CAE Inc. (TSX:CAE) declined 5.48% or 2.11 points to end at 36.39 and Northland Power Inc . (TSX:NPI) shed 5.44% or 2.29 points to 39.81.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 551 to 463 and 96 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.08% or 1.35 to $1754.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.39% or 0.27 to hit $68.98 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.31% or 0.22 to trade at $71.22 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.15% to 0.7984, while CAD/EUR fell 0.10% to 0.6804.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 93.002.
