Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.27% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, REITs and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.27% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cascades Inc . (TSX:CAS), which rose 5.35% or 0.81 points to trade at 15.95 at the close. Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd (TSX:FFH) added 4.12% or 22.13 points to end at 559.13 and Brookfield Business Partners LP (TSX:BBU_u) was up 3.71% or 2.11 points to 59.00 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ), which lost 3.27% or 1.23 points to trade at 36.24 in late trade. Intertape Polymer Group Inc . (TSX:ITP) declined 3.07% or 0.90 points to end at 28.37 and Russel Metals Inc . (TSX:RUS) shed 1.74% or 0.60 points to 33.91.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 504 to 450 and 112 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.49% or 8.70 to $1792.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.56% or 1.17 to hit $76.33 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.30% or 0.99 to trade at $77.16 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.04% to 0.8108, while CAD/EUR fell 0.09% to 0.6832.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.23% at 92.198.
