Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.28% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Clean Technology, Energy and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.28%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which rose 17.10% or 6.32 points to trade at 43.27 at the close. ARC Resources Ltd . (TSX:ARX) added 7.14% or 0.46 points to end at 6.90 and NFI Group Inc (TSX:NFI) was up 7.36% or 2.15 points to 31.35 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Quebecor Inc Class B (TSX:QBRb), which lost 3.52% or 1.13 points to trade at 30.98 in late trade. West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TSX:WFT) declined 3.48% or 2.76 points to end at 76.50 and Norbord Inc (TSX:OSB) shed 3.45% or 1.84 points to 51.53.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 560 to 506 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.06% or 1.20 to $1852.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.93% or 1.01 to hit $53.26 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.67% or 0.93 to trade at $56.59 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.50% to 0.7859, while CAD/EUR rose 0.14% to 0.6444.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.38% at 90.102.
