Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.20% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Energy and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.20% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aphria Inc (TSX:APHA), which rose 25.06% or 5.400 points to trade at 26.950 at the close. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) added 11.46% or 1.810 points to end at 17.610 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) was up 8.18% or 0.56 points to 7.41 in late trade.

Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 6.38% or 1.05 points to trade at 15.41 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 5.31% or 2.43 points to end at 43.30 and Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) shed 5.03% or 2.47 points to 46.59.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 634 to 455 and 88 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.53% or 27.90 to $1795.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.87% or 0.52 to hit $59.99 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $63.32 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.32% to 0.7884, while CAD/EUR fell 0.17% to 0.6509.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.05% at 90.515.
