Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.10% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Staples, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.10%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cronos Group Inc (TSX:CRON), which rose 9.59% or 1.19 points to trade at 13.60 at the close. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) added 9.36% or 2.79 points to end at 32.61 and Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) was up 8.05% or 1.080 points to 14.490 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc (TSX:ATDb), which lost 8.30% or 3.43 points to trade at 37.88 in late trade. Pan American Silver Corp (TSX:PAAS) declined 4.97% or 2.15 points to end at 41.08 and Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) shed 4.61% or 2.53 points to 52.37.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 524 to 500 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.57% or 10.50 to $1854.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.43% or 0.23 to hit $52.98 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.88% or 0.50 to trade at $56.08 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.20% to 0.7883, while CAD/EUR rose 0.63% to 0.6483.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 90.295.
