EU summit to find deal to unblock budget, climate goals- Michel

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The chairman of European Union leaders expressed confidence on Wednesday that the 27-nation bloc will reach agreement on Thursday that will allow to unblock the EU’s 1.8 trillion euro financial package and agree on ambitious climate goals.

“I am confident that we can find an agreement on a common package to allow for the swift implementation of both the Multi-annual financial framework and the Recovery fund,” Charles Michel said in a letter sent to EU leader ahead of the summit.

“An agreement on an enhanced emissions reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 is within our grasp. Work on the best way to get to this ambitious target is well under way. This would be a major achievement and would underpin our claim to play a leading role in fighting climate change,” he said.
